This week’s PS4 News includes the big reveal that in just a few days, a new free game will be available for download from the PlayStation Store.
Free PS4 game fans will get the chance later this week to download the latest addition to the Free-to-play genre. Plans were announced back in December for this latest launch, but we now have a firm release date for when this new experience will be available on the PlayStation Store. And it’s great news for gamers who don’t have a subscription to PS Plus since this new PS4 game won’t require one.

Players will note the Darwin Project will become available for download on PS4 and PS4 Pro on Thursday, January 16, 2020.
Developer Scavengers Studio has already launched the free-to-play Battle Royale game on PC and Xbox One and will complete their plans with the release on PS4.
Having been in early access on other platforms, the Darwin Project will be available to download for free on Xbox One, PC and PS4, starting on January 16.
As mentioned above, the Darwin Project is a Battle Royale game that pits players against each other until only one remains.
But it comes with some pretty big changes associated with the common subgenre to the normal gameplay.
The Darwin Project is much smaller in scale than in Fortnite and PUBG, with only ten players going head-to-head in each battle.
It features a Canadian-based match that draws several gameplay elements from the cold and harsh wilderness surrounding it.
And it also comes with a match boss, who can help change any encounter’s flow and even drop public votes to see what’s next.
“Darwin Project is a Battle Royale game that features 10 inmates fighting for fame and fortune in a gladiator-style Arena somewhere deep in the post-apocalyptic Canadian Rockies, where not only will you have to fight the other inmates in the Arena, but the harshness of Canadian winters as well,” , a statement from Scavengers Studio describe.
Every prisoner (that’s you!) must enter the Arena fitted with both a battle-ready Axis and Bow that best suits your style, and a corporate-sponsored high-tech gear of your choice that will improve your fighting capabilities and hopefully give you the advantage you need to claim victory over other players, and nature itself.
Let’s not forget the ever-watchful eye of the Show Director, an Arena supervisor who acts as the host of the show, causing chaos wherever they can go with a variety of skills such as dropping Nukes, creating Lava oceans or even helping prisoners by providing them with health and resources.
Those interested in checking out the Battle Royale action before it kicks off can find lots of videos and explanations of how matches are going on YouTube and Twitch.
The good news for the Darwin Project is that the PlayStation will open up lots of potential new fans to the project.
The downside is that a lot of free-to-play games already are available for download and play.
Dauntless, Genesis and World of Warships are just a few of PS4’s free games for 2020.
But there’s no reason to believe that this year Darwin Project will not be able to carve out its own niche among Realm Royale, Fortnite Battle Royale and Apex Legends.
